Research Institute for a Tobacco Free Society
In the government policy document, "Ireland - a Smoke Free Zone Towards a Tobacco Free Society" (1999), the establishment of a tobacco research centre was proposed and agreed. The Research Institute for a Tobacco Free Society was launched on 31 May 2001. The Institute is a limited company formed on the basis of a partnership between the Office of Tobacco Control and ASH Ireland/Irish Heart Foundation/Irish Cancer Society.
The main aim of the Institute is to form a multi-disciplinary academic community around the issue of tobacco control and to support the development of a tobacco free society by engaging in research in all aspects of tobacco from a public health perspective.
